The reality is…we hope our parents or loved-ones have fully prepared and already made plans for the ‘aging process’ — but truth be told, in most cases…
… it’s planning that is: Postponed for ‘another day’ – and when surveyed with questions like:
“Have you made plans for aging?” or “How will you support yourself after the age of 75”?
Most reply they “have an idea”, or dismiss the topic with words to the effect of: “it’s ok, the state will take care of me”
Unfortunately, this isn’t adequate (and regarding state help, mostly not true for long-term care).
Therefore, the sooner we turn and face these “unavoidable, inevitable conversations head-on”, the better … for all involved!
However, these conversations can be difficult and stressful, yet positive and beneficial at the same time — especially when handled mindfully, carefully and respectfully.
Now, if you’re already talking openly to your loved-one about a potential move to a residential community or doing your research beforehand… you’ll want to know the basics.
Generally speaking there are:
- Home Care
- Independent Living Communities
- Resident Care Homes
- Assisted Living Communities
- Memory Care Facilities
- Nursing Homes

Each of these options listed above, provide differing levels of care and service, depending on the levels of care and attention each individual requires — which can be evaluated with an assessment by a local physician or professional care-worker etc.
Here at Palos Verdes Villa, we are an assisted living facility / community.
An Assisted Living Community is a great option for any person that doesn’t require full-time medical care, yet needs (or prefers) to have some assistance or support with personal care or lifestyle activities.
Assisted Living at its core — is a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and care — which is designed to meet the needs (both scheduled and unscheduled) of those who require help (or prefer help) with daily activities.
To benefit from this special combination of services…
Residents pay a monthly rental rate.
Plus: fees for medication and other care-related services based on regularly scheduled assessments.
Usually, an Assisted Living Facility is a private-pay agreement between the facility and resident (although in some cases, the state can help low-income families cover some or all of the rent).
